sa01: The Experts
North American P-51D Mustang
Type: Combat Air Patrol
Date: November 10, 1944
Time: 1300
Background: Encounters between P-51s and Me 262s at altitude often resulted in a draw. The Mustangs could handily out-turn the Me 262s, while the German jets could use their speed advantage to simply climb out of a furball. Pilot skill often made all the difference.
Objective: In this mission you will be patrolling an area to the east of Köln. We want to make sure we maintain a constant presence in this area. If you encounter any enemy aircraft you are instructed to take them down.
sa02: Queen's Revenge
North American P-51D Mustang
Type: Escort/Strike
Date: November 16, 1944
Time: 1800
Background: Allied fighters sometimes performed dual roles in the same mission, escorting bombers to a target and then breaking away to attack ground targets in the vicinity.
Objective: Protect the bombers by attacking the anti-aircraft guns. As the bombers start their run, make a low-level sweep over the target area (waypoint B) and destroy all the 88 mm flak guns. Be careful not to let them shoot down too many of our bombers, as they must make it to their drop point (waypoint C).
sa03: Warrior Spirit
North American P-51D Mustang
Type: Combat Air Patrol
Date: November 27, 1944
Time: 1300
Background: As Germany lost more and more pilots through attrition, average pilot experience decreased dramatically. By late 1944, Allied pilots could fight more aggressively, knowing that the Luftwaffe was filling its ranks with green pilots.
Objective: Patrol the skies for German airplanes. You may encounter large gaggles of enemy fighters - though numerically they hold the advantage, most of their pilots are rookies.
sa04: Cat & Mouse
Republic P-47D Thunderbolt
Type: Armed Recon
Date: December 17, 1944
Time: 1040
Background: On the morning of December 17, 1944, Allied pilots were not even aware that a major German offensive was underway in the Ardennes. American fighter-bomber pilots were surprised to find large numbers of German panzers active along the front.
Objective: Your flight has been vectored to an area where German panzers were recently spotted. Take the fight to the enemy on the ground by destroying all the 1st SS Panzer Division armor that you can.
sa05:Bitter Sky
Lockheed P-38J Lightning
Type: Armed Recon
Date: December 17, 1944
Time: 1100
Background: While the weather was still relatively bad and Allied aircraft were not operating in force, the Luftwaffe did manage to provide relief to German ground forces. On December 17, P-38s were on patrol over Bitburg when a forward air controller vectored them to the Losheimer Gap. There they found numerous enemy transports and other vehicles. Dropping their 500 lb. bombs, the Lightnings destroyed several trucks. But before they could show the Wehrmacht the working ends of their 20 mm cannons, they were bounced by German interceptors.
Objective: Once you reach the Losheimer Gap, attack any German supply traffic you find between waypoints A and B, and proceed to waypoint C. You must destroy at least nine transports to win. Keep an eye out for German fighter patrols!
sa06: Bridge-Busters
Lockheed P-38J Lightning
Type: Strike
Date: December 17, 1944
Time: 1100
Background: Tactical fighter-bombers could deliver ordinance with greater precision than medium or heavy bombers. Bomb-laden fighters, however, were too slow for dogfighting; when encountering enemy fighters, the fighter-bombers would have to jettison their load before engaging.
Objective: Your target is the Bitburg bridge at waypoint B. Work quickly to destroy the bridge before enemy fighters intervene. After the bridge is destroyed, proceed to waypoint C to end the mission.
sa07: Grand Alliance
Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX
Type: Escort
Date: December 18, 1944
Time: 1100
Background: British aircraft contributed to the Allied victory in the Ardennes as well. On December 18, 1944, Spitfires from the 2nd Tactical Air Force escorted medium bombers. The British engaged 15 Fw 190s in the vicinity of Köln. Neither side managed to achieve a decisive victory, but the escorts achieved their primary objective - the bombers were left unmolested.
Objective: The target is a German headquarters. Make sure that the bombers reach the target and return home. You and the bombers will need to make it to waypoint E before you win the mission.
sa08: Hot Breakfast
North American P-51D Mustang
Type: Interception
Date: December 19, 1944
Time: 0800
Background: In 1944, with the Allies controlling the air, German bombers and transport aircraft could not safely operate during daylight.
Objective: Allied fighters have caught some He 111s that have failed to reach their airbase before dawn. The Allied fighters can make short work of the transports, but only if they can deal with roving German fighters. Destroy all He 111s that you encounter and proceed to waypoint D. You must prevent any of the transports from making it to their destination.
sa09: Housecall
Republic P-47D Thunderbolt
Type: Strike
Date: December 23, 1944
Time: 0930
Background: With the first day of good weather in over a week, Allied tactical air forces took to the air in support of US troops in 'the Bulge.' P-47s of the 36th and 373rd Fighter Groups attacked German airfields at Bonn-Hangelar and Köln-Wahn. At Köln, the Thunderbolts bombed hangars and shot up aircraft on the ground, only to be engaged by over 60 German fighters returning to their airbase. A similar situation unfolded at Bonn, where 30 Luftwaffe aircraft bounced the American fighters. In both cases, large dogfights ensued, with large numbers of German aircraft low on fuel engaging smaller numbers of US fighters.
Objective: Your target for today will be the airfield at Köln. Destroy any aircraft on the ground while watching out for AA. Keep an eye out for planes that are taking off to intercept you, and beware of enemy flights that may be returning to base. Immediately head back to base after all the parked planes are destroyed.
sa10: Wolfpack
Republic P-47D Thunderbolt
Type: Interception
Date: December 23, 1944
Time: 1130
Background: One of the most dramatic dogfights of World War II occurred over western Germany on December 23, 1944
. Col. David Schilling's 56th Fighter Group, the famous Zemke's Wolfpack of the VIII Fighter Command, flew a fighter sweep west of Bonn. The ground controller directed the group toward several large formations of German fighters. After a few misses, Schilling spied a swarm of some 90 enemy fighters over Euskirchen. Schilling maneuvered his group behind the enemy and made a leisurely approach from the east. The deception worked, and Schilling's fighters pounced on the enemy before the German pilots knew what had hit them. A wild 45-minute battle raged from 28,000 feet to the deck. The Americans knocked out 37 enemy airplanes for a loss of only four P-47s. This was one of the largest and most successful dogfights of the war.
Objective: This is a large, complex engagement where luck matters as much as skill. Destroy all Axis aircraft you encounter.
sa11: Fork-Tailed Devils
Lockheed P-38J Lightning
Type: Combat Air Support
Date: December 23, 1944
Time: 1400
Background: The closest the German offensive ever got to reaching its first objective - crossing the Meuse River - occurred on December 23, when the 2nd Panzer Division rolled to within a few miles of Dinant, a small village in the western Ardennes. Down the road a little ways, on the other side of the river, was the Florennes airbase, home to two groups of P-38s. The front was so close that the ground crews could hear the distant thunder of artillery from the east. Each group mounted over a half dozen separate missions that day in a maximum effort to hold the advancing panzers.
Objective: This mission is a turkey shoot of ground units. With your available ammunition, you must attempt to maximize your score by destroying at least 10 Axis tanks, while avoiding the dense concentrations of flak and random enemy fighter patrols. Return to waypoint C after you complete your objectives.
sa12: Bloody Bastogne
Republic P-47D Thunderbolt
Type: Armed Recon
Date: December 23, 1944
Time: 1400
Background: The besieged defenders of Bastogne welcomed the good weather on December 23 and the Allied fighter-bomber support that came with it. P-47s of the 364th Fighter Group brought considerable relief by attacking German positions with 500 lb. bombs and machine guns. However, the battlefield around Bastogne was a deadly environment. Flak concentrations around the city were dense, and throughout the day the Luftwaffe made several interventions, sometimes with groups as large as 20 fighters.
Objective: This is a search-and-destroy mission against artillery targets. The airspace is a very high-traffic area, so expect large formations of roaming German fighters. You must destroy at least seven artillery pieces and then return to waypoint C.
sa13: Jet Job
Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX
Type: Combat Air Patrol
Date: December 26, 1944
Time: 1200
Background: During the Battle of the Bulge, the new German jet jobs were being encountered more and more often. As long as a jet was airborne and traveling at top speed, it could easily outrun any Allied fighter. Nonetheless, there were occasional kills and many near misses. One probable damaged occurred on December 26th, when Lt. Ireland of the RCAF got on the tail of a lone Me 262 while on a fighter sweep over the battle area. The Canadian surprised the German pilot and got hits on the jet's port engine. He continued to fire until he ran out of ammunition, at which point it was prudent to break off the attack.
Objective: Destroy any Me 262s you can catch.
sa14: Choke Point
Lockheed P-38J Lightning
Type: Armed Recon
Date: December 27, 1944
Time: 1300
Background: As rail lines were effectively shut down, the Germans were forced to transport ammunition, fuel, and supplies along the sparse roads of the German Eifel east of the Our River. Crossroads, or choke points, provided convenient hunting-grounds for Allied fighter-bombers.
Objective: A large convoy consisting primarily of trucks has been reported in this area. Expect some light AA, perhaps more. You must destroy at least twenty-five trucks.
sa15: Train Wreck
Republic P-47D Thunderbolt
Type: Strike
Date: December 27
Time: 1130
Background: During the Battle of the Bulge, Allied fighters flew armed recon missions over the primary rail heads feeding the German offensive.
Objective: Recon shows that the Bitburg facility was not destroyed in a recent raid, and is being repaired to near-operational status. Your job is to go in and disrupt the repair work at the Bitburg railyard. There are no escorts today. You must destroy at least thirteen repair vehicles. Head for waypoint D after completing the objective.
sa16: Verräter!
Messerschmitt Me 262A
Type: Special
Date: December 30, 1944
Time: 0900
Background: You are a German pilot who has recognized the futility of continuing hostilities in the face of your country's certain and imminent defeat. You've decided to steal an Me 262 and attempt to land it at an Allied airbase.
Objective: Your erstwhile comrades will attempt to kill you rather than allow the secret jet technology to fall into enemy hands. Shake or destroy the pursuing fighters and reach waypoint B.
sa17: Long Shot
North American P-51D Mustang
Type: Combat Air Patrol
Date: December 31, 1944
Time: 1200
Background: During the Ardennes Offensive, the elusive Ar 234 jet bomber was occasionally spotted and - due to the jet's superior speed - only infrequently attacked. On December 31st, Lt. Col. John Meyer of the 352nd Fighter Group observed three of the jets flying in loose formation. He attacked one and believed he'd knocked it out; however, German unit records show that none of the bombers on this day were harmed.
Objective: Shoot down all the Ar 234s you encounter. Use discretion engaging other fighters in the area, as you are deep in enemy airspace and rescue is impossible.
sa18: Shooting Gallery I
Republic P-47D Thunderbolt
Type: Armed Recon
Date: January 22, 1944
Time: 1100
Background: By January 22, 1945, the German Army was withdrawing from Belgium. That morning a recce flight spotted a portion of the Sixth SS Panzer Army, which was in the process of transferring to the Eastern Front. IX and XIX Tactical Air Command fighters were immediately dispatched to the area. Hundreds of vehicles were claimed destroyed. As General Weyland summed up the slaughter in his diary entry for the day: "Germans trying to evacuate the Bulge, worse than the Falaise Pocket. Biggest day in TAC history of destructions..."
Objective: Elements of the Sixth SS Panzer Army have been spotted on roadways between waypoints A and B. Air opposition should be minimal, so crush the enemy column! You must destroy at least ten armored and eight non-armored vehicles to achieve victory.
sa19: Shooting Gallery II
North American P-51D Mustang
Type: Armed Recon
Date: January 22, 1945
Time: 1100
Description: On January 22, Ninth Air Force medium bombers shut down a key bridge spanning the Our River near Dasburg. This created a huge traffic jam on the west bank of the Our, with hundreds of vehicles trapped in the tightly congested area. These vehicles were attacked throughout the remainder of the day by air-controlled artillery and roving fighter-bombers.
Objective: Recon has reported a large number of German vehicles on the west bank of the Our River between waypoints B and C. They are sitting ducks, so you should be able to destroy a large portion of the vehicles. You must destroy seven armored and four non-armored vehicles to win. Watch out for low-level flak.
sa20: Bridge at Koblenz
Republic P-47D Thunderbolt
Type: Strike
Date: February 10, 1945
Time: 1000
Background: Bridges were notoriously difficult to take out. Medium and heavy bombers were often employed against both road and rail bridges, but some in the USAAF advocated the use of fighter-bombers when attacking targets that required precision.
Objective: A bridge near Koblenz is one of the key elements in the German communications network. Your objective today is two-fold. 1) Destroy the bridge with 1,000 lb bombs. The span will certainly be protected by anti-aircraft defenses, so keep your eyes open while making your approach. An additional flight of P-47s will precede you and sweep the area for AA threats. 2) Return to waypoint E. It will not be until this point that we will be able to verify the destruction of the bridge.
sx01: Cannon Fodder
Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6
Type: Combat Air Patrol
Date: December 17, 1944
Time: 1100
Description: In the first 24 hours of the German offensive, an important goal for the Sixth SS Panzer Army was to overwhelm US forces in the Monschau area and march on Eupen. This would have created a flank for Dietrich's panzer divisions to the south and would have prevented rapid Allied reinforcement of the northern shoulder. The objective was assigned to two Volksgrenadier divisions which appeared equal to the task. In the event, however, the typically deadly US artillery stopped the Volksgrenadier assault cold. To get the offensive moving, German air support was called in to destroy US artillery positions in the area. Ten Fw 190s and their escorts of two dozen Bf-109s moved in to strike the US guns, but before the group reached Monschau it was attacked by 15 P-47s. The mission failed. Had the Germans succeeded in pounding the US artillery effectively that day, US forces on the Elsenborn ridge would have faced an envelopment.
Objective: Fw 190s are attacking Allied artillery positions in the area. Fly a patrol in your Bf 109 and destroy all enemy fighters you encounter. Reach waypoint B to finish the mission.
sx02: Bus Stop
Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6
Type: Combat Air Patrol
Date: December 18, 1944
Time: 1600
Background: The overconfident Allies believe that the Luftwaffe can no longer challenge them in the skies over the battlefield. Many of their bombers and support aircraft are flying without the protection of fighter escorts.
Objective: Fly a combat air patrol over the front. Destroy all C-47 Allied aircraft you encounter.
sx03: Tank-Hunting
Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-8
Type: Armed Recon
Date: December 18, 1944
Time: 1020
Background: After 17 December, few German fighters arrived over the front to provide close air support and interdiction strikes. The Luftwaffe was forced to engage Allied airmen in western Germany, where US bombing operations were underway.
Objective: Avoid enemy fighters while attempting to aid the 116th Panzer Division. The greatest threat to our troops is the American artillery. At waypoint B, destroy the American gun positions as well any armored vehicles. You must reduce the enemy division strength to less than fifty percent.
sx04: Marauders
Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6
Type: Intercept
Date: December 23, 1944
Time: 1300
Background: Throughout the Battle of the Bulge, Marauders of the 9th Bombardment Division were called upon to attack communications targets and choke points in western Germany. On 23 December, the Ninth Air Force lost 35 medium bombers, one of the worst single-day losses of medium bombers during the entire war.
Objective: A returning flight has reported Allied medium bombers headed your way. Intercept the bombers, ignoring any fighter escorts unless you get one on your tail. The bombers are the high-priority targets.
sx05: Spirit of the Season
Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-8
Type: Interception
Date: December 24, 1944
Time: 1000
Background: On Christmas Eve of 1944, on the second day of good weather in a week, the Allies made a 'maximum effort' to destroy Luftwaffe airbases and shatter the lines of communication feeding the German offensive.
Objective: You must prevent all Allied bombers and their fighter escorts from reaching their target.
sx06: Head-to-Head
Focke Wulf Fw 190A-8
Type: Interception
Date: December 25, 1944
Time: 1130
Background: Intercepting Allied bombers was always a dangerous occupation, whether or not they were escorted by fighters.
Objective: Destroy all of the Allied bombers before they reach their target. Once the bombers have been eliminated, head for home - but watch out for enemy fighters!
sx07: Against the Odds
Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-8
Type: Armed Recon
Date: December 27, 1944
Time: 0830
Background: Beyond the first week of the offensive, the Luftwaffe could only make penny-packet efforts to aid German ground forces. The missions were extremely hazardous, as the German fighter-bombers faced roving Allied fighters both over the battlefield and over their own airbases.
Objective: This mission reflects the efforts of SG 4 as they attempted to attack US troop concentrations in Bastogne. Attack the enemy troops with bombs and guns. Keep friendly fire down to a minimum, and watch out for Allied fighters and bombers operating in the area. Head to waypoint C after you meet your objectives.
sx08: Death Blow
Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6
Type: Interception
Date: December 31, 1944
Time: 1200
Description: With the Ardennes salient shrinking, the Eighth Air Force returned some of its attention to the German oil industry. Over half of the Eighth's strike on January 14, 1945, were directed at German POL plants; however, some 400 heavies attacked the Rhine bridges in the Köln area. Here a ferocious air battle broke out between the famous JG 26 and a strong Allied fighter contingent. At least 13 German fighters were lost to the escorts in this encounter alone.
Objective: You are supporting Focke-Wulf bomber-destroyers who will attempt to stop a B-17 raid. You must take out at least five of the Allied escort fighters or our FW 190s will get slaughtered!
sx09: Bodenplatte I
Messerschmitt Me 262A
Type: Strike
Date: January 1, 1945
Time: 0800
Background: The Luftwaffe's last desperate effort to seize control of the air over the battlefield occurred on New Year's Day, 1945, when 800 German aircraft attacked Allied airfields in Belgium, France, and the Netherlands between 0800 and 1000 hours. The new German jet fighters played a small but effective role in the surprise attack.
Objective: Destroy Allied aircraft on the ground and in the air.
sx10: Bodenplatte II
Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6
Type: Strike
Date: January 1, 1945
Time: 0930
Background: An estimated 144 Allied airplanes were destroyed in Operation Bodenplatte, with another 62 damaged beyond unit repair. Though Allied losses were significant, the Luftwaffe paid dearly for the operation, losing over 300 aircraft and 215 pilots (150 dead or missing, 65 captured) - the greatest single-day loss to the Luftwaffe during the entire war!
Objective: Destroy Allied aircraft on the ground and in the air.
sx11: Bodenplatte III
Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6
Type: Strike
Date: January 1, 1945
Time: 0930
Background: In many instances, surprise in Operation Bodenplatte was far from complete. When two Luftwaffe squadrons - JG 2, the famous 'Richtofen' Geschwader led by ace Kurt Bühligen, and SG 4, veterans of the Eastern Front - attacked the A-92 airbase at St. Trond, air defenses had already been alerted minutes earlier by patrolling aircraft in the area. The German fighters had to suffer heavy AA fire during approach, over the airfield itself, and while exiting. Ground fire was so devastating that JG 2 lost nearly 40% of the pilots taking part in the operation. Losses on this scale could not be made good in the remaining months of the war.
Objective: Sestroy Allied aircraft on the ground and in the air.
sx12: Jet Terror
Messerschmitt Me 262A
Type: Interception
Date: January 1, 1945
Time: 1200
Background: The primary mission of the Me 262 was to destroy Allied bombers. Armed with four 30mm cannon, the jet fighter could be devastatingly effective. But by the time the revolutionary airplane was employed in significant numbers - never more than 30-50 sorties on any given day - the jets were simply overwhelmed by Allied numeric superiority. A single USAAF strike could consist of 1,300 bombers and 700 dedicated escorts. The jets were usually only able to make one pass at the bombers before being forced to break off the battle due to the sheer number of opposing fighters. In some cases, the Me 262s were used to temporarily engage the escorting P-51s, thereby allowing German piston-engine fighters to engage the bombers.
Objective: Inter-unit cooperation is the key to downing the bombers and their escorts. Deploy in unison with the other flights and take out 75% of the bombers.
sx13: Achilles Heel
Messerschmitt Me 262A
Type: Interception
Date: February 25, 1945
Time: 1200
Description: It didn't take long for the roving Allied fighter patrols to discover the Achilles heel of the Me 262: the excessively long period of time required for the jet's Jumo engines to bring the aircraft up to combat speed. This failure made the Me 262 vulnerable during both takeoff and landing. The Allies were quick to establish continual fighter sweeps over jet airbases. The Germans reacted by assigning piston-engine air patrols to cover the jets during the vulnerable stages of the mission.
Objective: Mustangs are approaching our airbase, so take off quickly to avoid them. Your target is a group of B-24s attacking a nearby target. You must destroy at least three of the B-24s to win.
sx14: Jet Jabo
Messerschmitt Me 262A
Type: Strike
Date: March 12, 1945
Time: 1430
Background: Seeing the absolute necessity of having a reliable bomber in order to stop the Normandy invasion, Hitler ordered the Me 262 to be produced as a fighter-bomber. Unfortunately, the aircraft was not ready by the time the Allies stormed the beaches, due to technical delays in producing the Jumo engine. Nonetheless, the fighter was produced with bomb-carrying capabilities, a role for which it was not particularly well-suited.
Objective: You are tasked with the destruction of a bridge near St. Vith.
sx15: Deadly Sting
Messerschmitt Me 262A-1a
Type: Interception
Date: March 18, 1945
Time: 1430
Background: A weapon that had the potential of stopping the USAAF bomber streams was the R4M rocket, a 55mm air-to-air folding fin missile containing 17.6 ounces of Hexogen explosive, giving it a considerable blast effect. Batteries of twelve rockets were mounted on wooden racks outboard of the jet nacelles. With a range of 800 yards, the attacking jets could remain well out of range of the bombers' guns. Even more importantly, the rockets could be salvoed in while traveling at high speed, unlike the fighter's cannons which had to be accurately sighted at a lower speed. Like the 262 itself, however, the weapon entered production too late to make a difference.
Objective: While on patrol you have encountered an Allied bomber group. A flight of 109s has already intercepted the fighter escort and is occupying them long enough for you to make a run at the bombers. Use your speed and firepower to your advantage. You must destroy at least three of the bombers to achieve success.
ta_01: Allied Training Mission 1: Takeoff
North American P-51D Mustang
This mission will teach you the basics of taking off from the runway. You will start on the taxiway, ready for takeoff. You will need to taxi and turn right on to the runway to face the proper direction. Keep in mind that takeoff speeds for other types of airplanes may differ. You may end the mission when you reach an altitude of 3000 feet.
This mission also introduces you to some of the instrument gauges that you may use during flight - please refer to pages 24-40 of the Museum Guide for reference. If you follow the directions properly, you should have no trouble.
ta_02: Allied Training Mission 2: Landing
North American P-51D Mustang
